‘The Sleeper’ by Words of a Fiddler’s Daughter

Jessie Summerhayes and The Ciderhouse Rebellion (Adam Summerhayes and Murray Grainger). This folk poem imagines one of William the Conquerer’s men who participated in the slaughter that was The Harrying of the North. The theme for this year’s National Poetry day is vision. This poem is about self recognition, facilitated by the reflection of yourself in dreams (a kind of vision) – specifically, in medieval England, it was believed that the Nightmare was a otherworldly figure who took the form of a female on a horse… who rode over your chest as you slept. Written and performed on National Poetry Day 2020
